While in WAR, the two would get their big break as they formed an alliance with Hiromichi Fuyuki called Fuyuki-Gun and would dominate WAR Six Man Tag team Division for years to come. It was in WAR that the two started going by their more famous names, Jado and Gedo. So I read the script that night and loved it and went in for the meeting the next day and got the role. I'd been living in LA for about a month and my credit card was stolen and all my money was taken – spent at Home Depot, which was great – and I was ready to pack my bags and go back to Australia because I didn't know how I was going to survive in LA any longer and then I got a call from my manager to say that an audition I'd done months ago for a film had been looked at by the producers of this TV show called The 100 and they wanted me to go in for a reading the next day. Explaining how she got the part in the series, Taylor said: The series premiered on Wednesday, 19 March 2014 at 9:00 p.m. On 1 March 2013, it was announced that Taylor had been cast as lead character Clarke Griffin in the new post-apocalyptic science fiction drama series The 100 on The CW. Taylor at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con for The 100 She later filmed the pilot of Winners & Losers. Taylor also filmed a role in the horror movie 6 Plots. In 2009, she was in an episode of All Saints and filmed a short drama-comedy movie called The Laundromat. She portrayed Snow White in a Christmas pantomime of Snow White from 19 December 2007 to 6 January 2018 in Weymouth Pavilion, England. Taylor travelled to the UK in late November 2007, and on 1 December 2007 she turned on the Weymouth Christmas lights. In 2007, she was nominated for Best Female at the Inside Soap Awards. Taylor finished filming her final studio scenes in 2007 and her final episode was screened on 8 February 2008. One of her reasons was that all of her on-screen family had been written out and new cast members gave the serial the feel of a different place, adding: "It just didn't feel like the family that I joined when I started three years ago". Later that year, Taylor decided to quit the serial to pursue other projects such as pantomime and a further career in the US. In 2007, Nell Feeney and Sianoa Smit-McPhee, who play Taylor's on-screen mother Janelle Timmins and sister Bree Timmins, were written out by executive producer Ric Pellizzeri, but it was confirmed that they wanted Taylor to remain in the serial as Janae. Taylor had originally auditioned for the role of Lana Crawford, however, actress Bridget Neval was eventually cast. She secured the role of Janae Timmins after previously appearing in a guest role in 2003. Taylor got her big breakthrough in the Australian soap opera Neighbours in 2005. Those existed since during the time of the Old Republic, while early in the Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Empire used Carbonite war droids. The usage of carbonite was obvious even for military purposes and carbonite guns were made, used to spray a target in carbonite to freeze and paralyse the enemy. A common part of a hyperdrive was a carbonite insert. While imprisoned in carbonite, a Force user could not use the Force, or interact with it on any significant level, making it a useful Jedi containment tool. Moruth Doole froze the body of the former warden of the Kessel prison system in carbonite in his office as a trophy. Savage Opress also became a subject of art in this manner prior to his death. Boba Fett dubbed it, " Man in Carbonite", enticing Jabba to pay a significantly higher price for Solo. This state also served as an art piece of Vader's creation. The modifications to the freezing chamber were successful in that Solo lived through the freezing process and entered into suspended animation. Han Solo was frozen in carbonite on Darth Vader's orders to test whether a Human could survive Bespin's freezing process before his plan to freeze Luke Skywalker. On Coruscant, Senator Viento was buried in this manner in the Senatorial Tombs. In some locales, carbonite was also used to preserve the bodies of the dead. Some of Coruscant's skyhooks were tethered to the surface with carbonite nanofiber. įilba used carbonite for smuggling bota harvested on Drongar during the Clone Wars to preserve its quality. Sometime during the Clone Wars, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker encased himself and his team in carbonite to be sent undetected to the planet Gwori, and later used this method on another mission. In 33 BBY, a year before the Trade Federation invaded Naboo, I-5YQ froze himself and Lorn Pavan in carbonite to survive an explosion set off by Darsha Assant during her duel with Darth Maul. There were numerous times when individuals encased themselves in carbonite. The inhabitants of Polus played a major role in the freezing process and mining. The planet of Polus also had vast quantities of the metal alloy in its frozen wastelands. Koros Major became a boomworld and one of the strongholds of the Mining Guild. The discovery that carbonite could be used to freeze spacers for their long journeys among the stars put an end to the generation ships. The Empress Teta system was a source of carbonite. The study Hearing from the ocean and into the river: the evolution of the inner ear of Platanistoidea (Cetacea: Odontoceti)is published in the journal Paleobiology. By evolutionary metrics, this would be a devastating loss.' Travis concludes, 'If we lose these species, we are losing the only two surviving representatives of this once huge group. Studies such as this reveal just how unique an animal they are and will hopefully increase interest in the current conservation efforts being made to protect them. With only a few thousand individuals of both species remaining, these are under threat of extinction. This may have given the species a competitive edge at times of high competition which would explain how it has survived when its closest relatives have not. The team concluded that the unique shape of the cochlea in the Ganges river dolphin may allow it to better filter out background noise and focus its echolocation for greater success when hunting. 'So, then we thought that maybe the unusual ear shape is why it survived when the rest of its group went extinct.’ Even within this group, the Ganges river dolphin is an outlier.’ We think it is part of how it is dealing with high frequencies within the cochlear canal and that is related to its different use of echolocation.'ĭra Mariana Viglino, a postdoctoral researcher at the Instituto Patagónico de Geología y Paleontología, Argentina, who led the project, commented, 'We found that there is no typical platanistoid inner ear shape. ‘The cochlear spiral is quite flat and really spaced out. Travis adds, ‘The shape of the inner ear of these dolphins is markedly different from any living species, including those that also live in riverine environments.’ What they found was that, surprisingly, the shape differed hugely from even the dolphin’s closest relatives. Travis and his team utilized 3D scanning to look at fossil skulls of extinct platanistoids and compared the cochleae to the Ganges river dolphin and other living dolphin species. However, until now, no one had examined the ears of fossil platanistoids. ‘The animal is almost blind and so it’s use of echolocation is essential to it’s survival and it was the evolution of this specialized ability that we set out to study.’Įcholocation is made possible by the specialised cochlea, a spiral cavity of the inner ear. It has a different body shape to the oceanic dolphins we are more familiar with and a long thin snout.’ Senior author Dr Travis Park, a researcher from the Natural History Museum, explains, ‘The Ganges river dolphin is an unusual looking animal. Now a team, including researchers from London’s Natural History Museum, have tried to uncover why this species has survived where others did not. These often murky and muddied rivers make echolocation essential for the dolphins to find their fish prey. The dolphin is primarily found in the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. One of the more unusual members of this group is the Ganges river dolphin, one of only two remaining species of its lineage, the platanistoids. This system uses two pulleys, each consisting of two conical halves. The first type of motorcycle transmission that doesn’t require manual shifting is a continuously variable transmission, or CVT, which is common in scooters. Types of automatic transmissions in motorcycles Broadly speaking they fall into four categories. But fortunately, for those who want to ride but can't or don't want to learn to shift gears, there are some alternatives to manual transmissions that allow you to go shiftless. We're using “automatic transmission” in a generic way, here, since the transmissions in motorcycles that don't require manual shifting are different from what is typically found in cars. market if you want one, motorcycles with automatic transmissions are still rare. And while it's getting to be almost impossible to find a car with a manual transmission in the U.S. This means riders who might otherwise stay in the saddle for years more are dropping out of motorcycling.īottom line: Manual motorcycle transmissions constitute a hurdle too high for some people wishing to get into motorcycling, as well as some wishing to stay in it. So daunting, in fact, that a good argument can be made for it being one of the biggest things keeping the sport from growing.Īt the other end of the experience spectrum, veteran riders who've been affected by age or injury or people with disabilities might find it hard to pull in a clutch lever or operate a shift pedal. Learning to shift a motorcycle transmission - coordinating the clutch, the engine rpm, and the shift pedal - might be the most daunting task faced by prospective new riders. Serving in this capacity in North Africa, Sicily, and France, he was awarded several medals for bravery, chief among them the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the British Distinguished Service Cross, and even the French Croix de guerre. Taking that knowledge back to America, he was made part of a unit called the “Beach Jumpers” whose job it was to make bogus beach landings designed to confuse the enemy as to the location of the real landings. Commissioned an officer at the outbreak of World War Two, the actor served on Lord Louis Mountbatten’s staff in England where he observed the British make cross-channel raids on German positions designed to confuse and deceive the enemy. Awarded three Purple Hearts and a Silver Cross for bravery, he was to spend months after the war recovering from the many wounds he received before being discharged and beginning his long acting career-a career, by the way, that is still going strong today.įew would have guessed the dashing actor and first husband to Joan Crawford would give up the sparkling lights of Hollywood to serve his country, but that’s exactly what he did. A combat infantryman during the war, he survived the bloody landings at Omaha Beach in June of 1944 and was even capture by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge in December, 1944 (though he managed to escape). This versatile actor with a long acting career and over 100 movies to his credit was one of the most decorated soldiers turned actors of World War Two. He later quipped about his military service by saying that he “Never fired a shot and maybe never wanted to. While performing that dangerous task, he was hit in the leg by mortar shrapnel and sent home-where he walked with a limp the rest of his life. Art Carneyīefore becoming Jackie Gleason’s lovable but bumbling side kick on the hit 1950s TV sitcom The Honeymooners, Carney fought at Normandy in July of 1944 as part of a machine gun squad. He also fought in the famous Battle of the Bulge in December of 1944 and was even rumored to have been known to answer German propaganda that was being broadcast at regular intervals from a loudspeaker by shouting “Toot Toot Tootsie goodbye!” I guess Mel Brooks was Mel Brooks even back then. A corporal in the combat engineers, his job was to destroy enemy obstacles and included occasionally defusing mines-a job that required a steady nerve, a calm demeanor, and no doubt a good sense of humor. Hard to believe the off-the-wall director and actor famous for such goofy films as Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, and Space Balls was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), but it’s true. His wounds bothered him after the war, resulting in acute leg pain that made it increasingly difficult to mount a horse (Matt Dillon without a horse? Unthinkable!) It became so bad he had to undergo a series of operations to remove bullet fragments that had fused into the bone. After undergoing surgery several times, Arness was honorably discharged in 1945, having received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart medals. As a rifleman for 3rd Infantry Division, Arness landed at Anzio, Italy in January, 1944, where he was wounded by enemy fire and evacuated. Think Matt Dillon wasn’t for real? The fictional old west sheriff was every bit as tough as the six-foot, seven-inch tall actor who played him. In November, 1943, Albert (then a young Navy Lieutenant by the name of Eddie Heimberger-his real name), rescued dozens of stranded and wounded Marines from the landing craft he commanded, much of the time while under heavy enemy machine-gun fire. People generally remember Eddie Albert as the inept farmer and perennial straight man on the goofy hit 1960’s TV show Green Acres, but few know that he also won the Bronze Star with Combat “V” for his actions during the invasion of Tarawa. Some puzzles let me attach my Adjunct through solid walls, and the acid-battery puzzle allows its rotating bridges to clip through each other in particularly ugly fashion. Other times my character would easily step across a similar crack. I sometimes came to a jarring stop while walking around, looking down to find a gap of just an inch or two preventing my progress. The puzzles I enjoyed least were three-dimensional scavenger hunts where the solution was simple, but required wiggling around to get the right line-of-sight to the next interaction point in some awkward spot. A couple were genuine brain-teasers (like one involving connecting circuit terminals in a giant acid-bath battery assembly, and another involving navigating a multi-car train through horizontal and vertical space), but several felt perfunctory, just using my Adjunct to chain together the right contact points within a single room. For the first time ever, I wished that a point-and-click adventure’s puzzles had been more complicated and obtuse. Firmament has no such excuse to fall back on. The Witness never had to give plausible mechanical context to its line-drawing challenges, and Resident Evil’s bizarre puzzle mechanisms are handwaved as being the work of eccentric architects and mad scientists. Every machine feels like it could be a real device and has a logical purpose tying into the overarching quest. One of Cyan’s stated goals with Firmament was to create a grounded, coherent setting, and it succeeded maybe too well. I puzzled my way through the entire adventure in a little under 10 hours with only a couple snags. One extends the range of the Adjunct, one lets you bounce your interface to targets out of direct reach, and one unlocks a handful of heavy-duty locks found later on. Simple and intuitive, complicated only by a couple of unlockable abilities given at the midpoint of each of the three realms. The interface on a huge quarry crane lets you cycle between three modes moving the arm forward/back, up/down, and extending/retracting the grabber, all done with just two buttons and the mousewheel. More complex machines let you pick additional interactions with the mousewheel. Each machine is controlled simply by twisting your Adjunct left or right (physically in VR, or Q & E on desktop) to control one linear function, whether it’s a door opening and closing, elevator rising or falling or something more esoteric. Point it towards anything interactive (clockwork sockets highlighted with blue paint) to tether your extending laser-cable to it, then start fiddling. Continued abuse of our services will cause your IP address to be blocked indefinitely. It’s never a mystery as to when it's puzzle time: there’s no inventory management or pixel hunting in Firmament, just manipulating big steampunk machines with the Adjunct gauntlet.
